On Assignment – Tournament Sports

This time of year is crazy at any newspaper. As the former photo editor of a large group of weekly papers it was my job to arrange for photographic coverage of all the graduations, proms, and tournament sports for our towns. This was not an easy task. Our resources were very low so freelancers were employed to cover many of these events. Now I find myself on the other end of the spectrum as a freelancer. Sports is something that has come easily to me from the very beginning of my career. From playing various sports to photographing them is where I have fun.

This year it seems girls lacrosse has been the sport of choice for me. So far I have photographed three girls tournament games, not all of them pretty. The last game was a good one but wet for the whole game. The gear I chose was not really up to the task. The camera (Canon 7D Mk2) was but the lens, a very old Canon 300 2.8 from 1995 was not. The percentage of keepers was not very high as the lens had trouble keeping up with the action. The images that were good were outstanding as the two highlighted here.
